Spoiled by the Force

The Air Force spoiled me. Thinking back and comparing to now, boy was I spoiled professionally.

It’s a good thing I had to log in to my work email last night, because if I saw that same email this morning I would probably have gone home. A promotion of a colleague that more or less made me want to vomit – literally. I just couldn’t believe that *I* didn’t get the position. I must mention, though, that I didn’t apply… So… Therein lies the problem.

Back on point: why did the Air Force spoil me? Because, professionally speaking, promotions and raises were a given up to a certain level – the level at which I left the Air Force for greener pastures. It became well-known of when you’d make rank. And my bosses pushed to give me more – unofficial increases in responsibility – a way to shine above the rest.

After the Air Force I joined a company that, for whatever reason, promoted me after just 3 months – a mere continuance of the already-set promotion schedule. And ever since, it’s been a challenge to gain any ground.

Sure I’m in a better place than I was years ago. Sure I have a better life. Sure I’m more comfortable and arguably more happy. But I’m missing that gain – missing that growth – missing that improvement in career.

For 3 years now I have held the same title and position, though my duties have changed slightly over the years. I’m quickly becoming over-educated and under-employed (actually, I’ve been under-employed for a long time). What’s worse is that I have seen little to no growth – especially compared to the schedule set of 6 years between the Air Force and the post-Force job.

I’m not one to sit by and let things happen. Actually, yes, yes I am… But seeing the promotion announcement last night made me feel left behind. Hopefully that was the last straw. I’m educated, I’m qualified, and I’m smart – I can do anything, literally anything, that I set my mind to. I’ve been in over my head and came out on top time and time again. I’m a survivor. I’m a go-getter. I’m good. Hear me roar. Hear my battle cry!

… … …

Thanks for the pep talk. Now let’s go get it.

(And keep on me about it!)

Is blogging dead?

It is for me, or so it seems.

It’s been a long time since I seriously sat with the intent of writing a post, be it poetry/prose or the non-writing blog content. For a long time I’ve thought about splitting this blog in two in order to keep those two seemingly different content types apart, mostly out of respect for each audience type.

And then there’s Twitter. And my iPad. And food. And alcohol. And life. And school (again). They all get in the way and take away attention and interest from this. From here. From you.

But honestly, I’d like to reconnect with you. See if we can’t re-light the flame that has seemingly extinguished.

So hello again, again, and probably another again. Here we are: face to face.

What do you think? What do you think about the content split? What are your thoughts?

Who am I kidding… I’m the only one who’s reading this. (Except for you, you’re apparently reading this as well.)

Back on point: is blogging dead? I guess we all face this question at some point or another if we’ve ever associated with blogging in any way. But I think I have the answer:

Blogging dies or lives for each one of us; it never dies as a whole. Blogging dies if you ignore it or don’t partake – it lives so long as you pay attention to it. But, know that so long as one person pays attention to it, it will always be alive.

And at last check of my Google Reader, quite a few people pay attention on one side or the other. So no – blogging is not dead.

Now every day is a vacation day. Good.

I remember like it was yesterday:

One day last April, I walked into Tarzjay with little direction (just made up that spelling, because quite frankly I have no idea how else you would spell it, other than ‘Target’. Stfu.). (Great, now I’ve gone off storyline and the entire flow of this is wrong. I need to start over. *Ahem*)

I remember like it was yesterday:

One day last April, I walked into Tarzjay with little direction, and walked out with freedom.

Freedom from The Man. Freedom from responsibility. Freedom from everything life sucks at.

Dear, friends - I walked out with the v-neck undershirt, and I’ve never felt better.

Long gone are the days of crew-neck undershirts while at work. Long gone are the wantings to rip off my shirt Hulk-style and smash it to bits while screaming loudly.

Long gone is the shackle around my neck.

Hooray, I say. Hooray – hooray – hooray.

I am free… I am free… I am free.

(Now work is more like a non-work day, except that I still have to go into the office, but still do similar things to when it’s a non-work day, per usual. Good.)

Eff you, shirt collar!

I think I might be allergic to shirt collars, and I think it’s getting worse each day.

Some days all I want is to rip off my shirt, throw it in the air, kick it down, pick it up, throw it down, stomp on it, rip it, tear it, and move on with my life, happy that I no longer have a shirt collar around my neck.

Some days I think of how this must be some sort of sign that I’m meant to wear other clothing with less restrictive collars and be in a profession where it is suitable to have other options for shirt collars.

I bet you never thought you’d read a blog post about shirt collars – or maybe you have – or maybe you’ve even written your own – or thought the same… either way.

Just thought you should know.

Welcome to my life.

Will somebody stop the boredom? Please?

Lately it seems I spend my days mostly trying not to stab myself in the eye. Not because of my work environment, annoying coworkers, stupid people, or too much work; no, that would make too much sense.

It’s mostly due to my growing boredom with life. Work’s boring, after-work’s boring, hell… even sleep is boring since I don’t dream very much (that I can remember at least).

Running off to Africa, Europe, or Australia (or all three) seems to be the only option for excitement these days.

Or maybe I should become a carpenter…

Or join a circus…

Or buy a horse and ride across America. Alongside the interstates. With dog trotting beside.

Whatever it is, it better make haste because I’m growing impatient.

The Highlights (The Tunes)

Not too long ago, I posed The Highlights (not the painting hairs kind). In it, I highlighted several posts from the early days (because many of you haven't been around for the entire year, and you wouldn't want to be left out on the early stuff, would you?).

This post is the follow-up to that post, and highlights some of the writings around bands, concerts, and music I've encountered over the past year.

For some of you, this will be like a stroll down memory lane. For others, you may find new love... or something like that... or nothing like that at all.

In fact, it's quite likely you've already given up and moved on to something else by now. But I'm going to continue anyway. I'm a survivor like that.

So, here it is - enjoy!

-- In 30STM and The Moment, I wrote about how music can be liberating, how it soothes the soul, and how it can create what I call 'The Moment' - a time when you realize that man is good, and that all is alright. Read more about it here.

-- I wrote a follow-up piece a few days later, which actually was written on my phone shortly after the show, and talks about how the music that night inspired a new generation of musicians. It's kind of inspiring (at least I think so). Read on.

-- Here's a piece detailing how I (possibly) saved someone's life at a concert.

-- I wrote how Shinedown and vanilla (the flavor) are an unfortunate combination in this one.

-- I wrote about an unlikely experience with FaceMan here, and then another time about FaceMan's First Waltz here.

-- Somehow hula hoops and Jesus ponies made their way into a post about a music festival here.

-- And here's one about Peter Steele from Type O Negative and Ozzy Osbourne (and how Ozzy's continued existence may be due to some type of artificial life... because somehow he's still alive).

The most important of all shirts

Captain’s Logbook
February 4th, 2011
Day 12

Just twelve days into the journey and we already had a bad day. After only 30 minutes into the morning, it had come to my attention that I had run out of shirts. No, not button-downs, long-sleeved, polo’s, or the sweater-likes. No. I had run out of the most important of all shirts: the undershirt.

After allowing panic to set in for a moment, my hand raised and swung across my face. I quickly slapped myself and emerged from the daze. I ran to the closet. I scoured the racks for something white with short sleeves to wear under one of the more usual shirts listed above.

I came across on shirt, and put it on. The neckline, unfortunately, was worn and un-presentable. I quickly threw it to the floor. Back to the closet I ran.

Looking at all the colors, none fit the category of white. Almost everything was colored, and did not fit the bill.

Then, on the shelf above, sandwiched under a stack of folded clothes, a glimmer of white caught my eye.

There it was! I had found exactly what I was looking for.

I pulled the shirt out, shook it in the wind, raised it above my head, and put it on. I briskly walked to the mirror for inspection. “This one will do the job” I exclaimed.

I quickly put on the more usual shirt of the day over the undershirt and moved to charge head-on toward the day.

I hadn’t looked back until now.

We are very fortunate there was no bloodshed during such an event on this leg of the journey.

We can thank our lucky stars for today.

The Symbol of Man

She laid dying on its footsteps
Life shattered by love and hate
The crowd gathered ‘round as it always does
…This place was no longer safe

Nor had it ever been
For many lives, countless, have lost
To our love and to our hate
…This was supposed to be ‘our place’

A place for some to rest and pray
But for others, a place to criticize
This is not a house of worship, though
A monument built in man’s eye

It is here where people gather
To give respect to fellow man
Yet also to tear them down
Because it stands for every man

Though built with great intention
It has driven so many apart
Like us, this monument, this symbol of man
May have been doomed right from the start

-
-
-
-
-

The symbol of man, our monument to us
An illustration of our totality, in accuracy
Deservedly, and
Unfortunately...

Time

_

Time, it slips,
slowly, slowly away.
Once, some time ago,
it was far, far away.
But now, it seems,
it was just yesterday,
and tomorrow is quickly advancing.

Haiku From Space

stars collide in space
non-air drifts into abyss
from nothing, something

they rotate with ease
gas giants spin slowly and
rocky spheres turn fast

cosmic wonders hang
like picture frames on a wall
the ceiling of sky

comets, they fizzle
dancing in the milky way
balls of ice leading

the cosmos delights
the vast and wonder collide
space is majestic

Where do you draw the line?

Q: “If you’re a blogger, where do you draw the line? Do you even have one? And how do you find the courage to cross it?”

Although I have been consistently posting for only a few months now, I have had other blogs in the past. Long ago my old blog used to be a place for my true feelings, my inner thoughts, and my demons too. I look back and wonder if letting those thoughts out and creating words on a screen helped… maybe they did, maybe they didn’t – I’m not sure.

Now, my new blog is mostly geared toward the funny, albeit dry humor, and sometimes poetry. The stories with a touch of humor allow me to express my humoristic side, while the poetry sometimes allows for a more serious, or exploratory dive, into many different expressions of emotion.

My new blog was intended to give an audience something to read, something to enjoy, and something to keep coming back to. Thus, by design, my blog isn’t meant to be a daily portrayal of the humdrum, the boring, the negative thoughts, or sad feelings; it is designed to be an outlet of my humoristic character, with a touch of art and expression here and there. Because of this, I will likely steer away from the off-topic demons and sadness… unless I’m immediately moved to express them to the world in this venue.

I don’t know if this gives you direction, but I hope it goes to show that it’s ok to have a design, or theme, to a blog… it’s yours; do with it what you want.

-JRM

And with that –

Thank you all for reading, commenting, and (hopefully) enjoying; it’s been a pleasure!

…Now let’s get out there and have some fun!!!

The Human Spirit and Opportunity

There is something to be said about the human spirit – it takes a lot to break it down, and it takes a lot to keep it on the ground. More times than not, it’s up again in due time.

It’s tough to stay positive when it seems that nothing good is happening, and I understand that. I also know that it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when our eyes are closed.

I propose we keep our eyes open, ready, willing, and able to see the slightest of opportunities – the opportunities of our tomorrow: the opportunities we are given, as well as those we create ourselves.

Moving Forward... With My Education

Today is the last day that I have to register for classes. Come December, I will have completed my current education endeavor. While I look forward to the possibility of not having class ever again, and never having to write a paper again, and never having to worry about school, I still have another year’s worth of education benefits after I finish my MBA in December.

While I’m excited to finish up and be done with it, I also don’t want to waste (not use) one full year of school funding that just so happens to be free (thank you, GI Bill). Given what I just said, it should come as no surprise that I have little interest in going on to further my education. And given the statement two sentences ago, I most likely will continue on with school.

But now, what do I go for? There has been suggestions, talk, and thoughts on a Master’s, another MBA emphasis, a Doctorate program or a PhD. I believe I have ruled out a Master’s as well as an additional MBA emphasis, leaving the Doctorate or PhD.

Can I take a moment to express something? I can’t believe I’m talking about this. Not once when I was younger did I consider myself Doctorate of PhD potential – it wasn’t of interest and it certainly wasn’t in the plans. And honestly, I’m a little shocked at myself when I think about this step. I’m the first in my family to go to college, let alone become a “doctor” of anything. I guess I’m a little proud of myself, and I’m sure my parents are too. My father has been pushing the education subject for a long time; before I started my BSBA in the Air Force, after I finished and moved to Colorado, before I started my MBA, and now, to some degree, that I’m finishing up my MBA. Thanks, Dad.

So, what are the possible studies of interest at such a level? My counselor at school who is also my Strategic Management instructor suggested a Doctorate of Management. I have also thought possibly a PhD in Public Affairs/Policy/Administration, or maybe something in the finance arena. Quite honestly, the doors are wide open, which is good, but also at that level of education you pretty much become pigeonholed and specialized in a short range of topics. I guess if you’re ok with what you want to be when you grow up that it will work out just fine.

Ah, but I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. And that, my friends, is the hesitance in making a decision, and somewhat shows the level of seriousness I have to take this next step. Deciding to get my MBA was a cinch: business-type studies, a continuation of my undergrad. Post-grad? Not so easy, especially when I don’t know what I want to do when I grow up.

Of note, and especially of interest to me, is that this level of education catapults individuals into the consulting sector of industry – something I have had interest in after I finished my BS. Also of note is the opportunity to join Academia and live the life of a professor, consulting on the side, having summers off, and of course taking sabbaticals to far-off lands (or the backyard).

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

On Living Life

I happened upon my uncle’s Facebook page yesterday, and this is what I found:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, beer in one hand, a beautiful woman in the other.... body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, what a ride!”

I did a quick search of the internet and found that the best source of this statement is “anon.”

What didn’t surprise me was that my uncle had something like this on his Facebook page, I also was already aware that he had a Facebook page, so I wasn’t too surprised there either.

What did surprise me was that rarely do people live up so such mantras. I think this is a good mantra, and while it may put you in precarious situations throughout life, either morally, ethically, or both, chances are you’ll have surely worn your welcome by the time you die.

And why not wear out your welcome? Why stand in line like a good little sheep, mouth shut, and herded from one life-phase to the next?

Why not buck the system, live life to its fullest, and live your life the way you, and only you, want to live it?

Why should it matter what others think? After all, your life isn’t theirs – they have their own life to waste (or live it up!). I mean really, you’re still dead in the end – so why not have that unbridled happiness and overindulged fun that you’ve always wanted?

Now, a lot of people would say that “life” and “family” and “friends” will all get in the way of living life the way they want to, or have caused them to be more cautious, more restrained, more “mature” and “respectable.”

I say bring them along for the ride! As you’re living and loving life to its fullest – so are they! (And probably better off for it.) And chances are, the dull and boring dailies won’t be the “norm” anymore, and people will start to live… really live.

Like the chapters of a book

There’s something to be said of turning pages in a book, reading one page after another, experiencing the story, and waiting to see what’s beyond the current page. Turning to the next only to find that it’s half the size of the page before and a new chapter is about to begin.

Life is like that: chapter after chapter after chapter. One day to the next, one month to the next, one year to the next, one decade to the next. Sometimes the chapters seem very short and sweet, short and painful, long and boring, and certainly some seem long and burdensome. Sometimes you can’t wait to get onto the next, and sometimes you wish you could stay there forever.

Just like a book, we must continue on with the current chapter, patiently awaiting the next. Sometimes we may not like it, and grow impatient of the chapter’s end. Other times we may not like it, because it happened so fast and we wanted the chapter to go on. Either way, we always end up wanting more. Yearning for more. Waiting for what’s next.

It’s natural to read on only to see what’s coming on the next page, even if we’re struggling to get through the rough of the current chapter and wanting so deeply for something else… maybe sometimes even wishing to end the book right there.

Like the chapters of a book, no matter what we do we must continue reading(!)… for no other reason than if we don’t, we will not leave our current chapter, and will be left within for far too long.
